In the Atelier
“In the Atelier” is an abstract painting that emerged through the spontaneous collaging of paint impressions and brushwork on paper. The viewer finds their own motifs and meaning within the abstraction.
So too for me, as both author and viewer — this painting is a self-portrait. I see a depiction of myself in the studio, mid-creative reverie, in which the artist and the work merge into a single whole. The form at the centre represents me from behind, in the act of creation, where the red paint signifies my head.
The work originated from a miniature study that was digitised and reproduced at a larger scale. Following reproduction, I refined the painting with acrylic colours to achieve the true richness and luminosity of the gold-painted areas.
